The novel is set during the French Revolution, more precisely during the Jacobin reign of terror, in the years after the execution of King Louis XVI, while Queen Marie Antoinette was imprisoned in the Temple prison.
Tilly Begshaw's student years at Cambridge served partly as a prose backdrop within which she built the plot of the novel Scandalous.
The story is told through the eyes of narrator Kenneth Trachtenberg, a 35-year-old assistant professor of Russian literature, born in Paris, but now living in the Midwest of the USA.
