Djela Augusta Šenoe - Zlatarovo Zlato

Djela Augusta Šenoe - Zlatarovo Zlato

August Šenoa

The first Croatian historical novel - the most Zagreb of all stories. It is a story about the forbidden love of a goldsmith's daughter and a nobleman's son on the historical stage of Zagreb's streets and squares in the sixteenth century.

Zlatarovo zlato is a famous novel by August Šenoa, divided into 26 chapters. Written in 1871, the novel is not only Šeno's first novel, but also the first Croatian historical novel in general. It was published for three years in the magazine Vienac, and in sequels.

The novel tells about historical events from Zagreb and its surroundings in the 16th century, but also about a romantic story between the main protagonists. Therefore, the novel has not only the characteristics of a historical novel, but also of a romantic novel. The characters in the novel are divided into fictitious and historical, just like its plot.

The main characters in the novel have a clear romantic streak. The good characters are plastically positive, and the villains are absolutely evil. However, historical figures have retained their realistic characteristics.

In the historical part of the story, the feudal society of that time and the historical struggle between the Croats and the Habsburg Monarchy are shown.

Love and passion, scheming and intrigue, nobles, citizens, cheaters, murderers... The colorful cast of characters will not leave you indifferent!
