Naš čovek u Havani

Naš čovek u Havani

Graham Greene

"Our Man in Havana" (1958) is a satirical spy story set in pre-revolutionary Cuba, combining humor, suspense, and the exotic atmosphere of Havana. Greene satirically criticizes the bureaucracy of the intelligence services and the absurdity of the Cold War

The main character, Jim Wormold, is a humble vacuum cleaner salesman in Havana, living a simple life with his daughter Milly. Financially pressed and influenced by his friend, Dr. Hasselbacher, Wormold agrees to work for the British intelligence service MI6, despite having no experience in espionage. To please his superiors, he begins to fabricate reports and fictitious agents, based on real people around him, and even draws fake blueprints of military installations inspired by vacuum cleaner parts.

His deception escalates when his fabricated reports attract the attention of London, which sends reinforcements, including Secretary Beatrice and Chief Carter. Wormold's lie becomes dangerous when real events begin to reflect his fabrications, including murders and a conspiracy against him. Through a series of comical but tense situations, Wormold realizes that his fabricated reports have caused real consequences. Eventually, faced with possible exposure, Wormold returns to London, where, instead of punishment, MI6 rewards him to avoid scandal.
