Oproštajni udarac

Marguerite Yourcenar

The great writer's short novel The Parting Shot is one of those great works in which the conciseness of the statement and the brevity of the form emanate the fullness of the text and the passion of its meanings.

The First World War and the October Revolution form the historical framework of this work, although it also extends to the Spanish Civil War, in which Eric was also involved, consistent in his ``caste enmity towards the Bolsheviks''. And right there, as if in a darkened mirror, the central character moves sovereignly with the lucidity possessed by Evil. Sofia, deciding for the other side, ends her life tragically - and the final blow that Eric gives her with a revolver shot brings the inner tension of the work to a paroxysm.
