Zovem se Crvena

Orhan Pamuk

Istanbul, 16th century. Poverty, plague, immorality and unrest reign outside the walls of the luxurious palace. This, of course, does not prevent the Sultan from commissioning a book in celebration of his reign that will depict the full grandeur of the Ot

To this end, he orders Tetku Efendi to gather the best illuminators in the country, whose secret mission is to illustrate the book in the style of the European masters of the time. However, since figurative art was considered an offense to Islam, this order is not without danger for the executors, which is why no illuminator is allowed to see the book in its entirety.

The problems begin when one of the miniaturists disappears, and the Sultan demands that his death be solved in three days. Is this death the work of an angel of vengeance who discovered the blasphemous work? Or will the blame fall on Kara, the jealous pretender to the hand of Tetku's daughter, the incomparable beauty Shekura?

This amazing story is woven around mysterious murders and love, the questioning of religion and philosophy, the confrontation of East and West, and, especially, around the art of miniature in moments of its retreat and disappearance. It is told by the characters themselves, so each new chapter provides insight into the events from a different perspective.

Such a narrative approach reflects the author's view that writing a novel provides the pleasure of viewing from above, like looking at a scene from a balcony.
