Život u visokom društvu

Život u visokom društvu

John Braine

The novel follows Joe Lampton, an ambitious man who, after success, tries to maintain his position in high society, but faces a crisis of marriage, morality, and his own values.

The novel Life in High Society by John Brain is a sequel to the novel Room at the Top and follows the further life of Joe Lampton, a once poor young man who has managed to win a place in the upper social class. Having gained fame, money and marriage to the wealthy Susan Brown, Joe tries to live the life he once considered his greatest goal.

The plot takes place several years after his rise. Joe now has a family, social position and career, but he gradually discovers that wealth and belonging to high society do not bring him the expected happiness. His marriage to Susan becomes filled with dissatisfaction and alienation, and Joe again encounters his own weaknesses, ambitions and unfulfilled desires.

An important role in the novel is played by the conflict between Joe's desire for success and the realization that the price of this success is the loss of sincerity and inner peace. The characters around him represent the hypocrisy and superficiality of the social elite who care more about reputation than about real human relationships.

Through Joe's story, Braine critiques British class society in the 1950s, in which social status is often determined by money, background, and connections. The novel depicts a man who has achieved his dream of advancement, but must confront the question of whether he has truly become happier.
