Izabrane pjesme

Antun Gustav Matoš

The French school of taste and form, as well as the tradition of Croatian lyricism from Štoos to Kranjčević, is the ground on which the most distinctive Croatian poetic personality grew.

Perhaps the most compelling summary of Matoš's life and creative odyssey comes from his most important pupil, but also the fiercest critic - Tin Ujević (In memory of A. G. Matoš): Having examined his horizons and explored his paths, from Zagreb's Upper Town and the polymeter of Belgrade cobblestone to these Paris irrepressible and cheerful boulevards, Discipulus will nevertheless light a channel to the shadow of a man who wanted to be a fighter of Croatia, who loved the exalted Slave and The Goddess equally in prayer and in profanity, and who, without wisdom, almost unconsciously, against his own will, only with the power of feeling and the immediacy of life, broke through the tunnels for later Croatian roads to the West and east, to the Balkan energy and European culture.
