Aldous Huxley

Point Counter Point (1928) is Huxley's longest and most complex novel, inspired by musical counterpoint, where the story develops through interwoven plots and parallel plots, switching abruptly between characters and themes.

The novel intertwines the lives of the intellectual elite of 1920s Britain through a musically inspired structure of the novel: parallel stories of love, death and the search for meaning are modulated between characters such as the cerebral writer Philip Quarles, who returns from India with his family; his wife Elinor, tempted by the demagogue Everard Webley; Mark Rampion, a holistic idealist similar to D.H. Lawrence; and young lovers like Walter Bidlake. Old painter John Bidlake faces cancer and creative decline, while nihilist Maurice Spandrel devotes himself to vice to challenge God, culminating in the murder of Webley and suicide alongside Beethoven. Denis Burlap, the hypocritical editor, uses faith for greed. The novel satirically explores the conflict of mind and passion, the hypocrisy of society, political extremism and the fragmentation of modern life, leaving the question of harmony open in the chaos of personal and social forces.
