Otvoreni čamac

Otvoreni čamac

Stephen Crane

Hemingwayeva preporuka za čitanje: anegdota kaže kako je Hemingway mladom studentu novinarstva Arnoldu Samuelsonu, uz popis obavezne literature za čitanje, poklonio svoj roman Starac i more i Otvoreni čamac Stephena Cranea.

Stephen Crane, američki pisac (Newark, 1. XI. 1871 – Badenweiler, Njemačka, 5. VI. 1900). Kao četrnaesto dijete protestantskog pastora, rano je raskinuo s tom sredinom i živio od pisanja po novinama i časopisima. Njegov roman Maggie: djevojka s ulica (Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, 1893) drži se prvim američkim naturalističkim romanom, dok je Crvena značka hrabrosti (The Red Badge of Courage, 1895) roman o sazrijevanju mladog vojnika u Američkome građanskome ratu. Impresionistička tehnika i uvid u motiv straha čine to djelo jednim od temeljnih ostvarenja američkoga modernizma. Pisao je i pjesme (zbirka Rat je dobrostiv – War Is Kind, 1899) i novele, npr. Otvoreni čamac (The Open Boat, 1898), zagovarajući ideju ljudske solidarnosti.
