The novel The Materassi Sisters, published in 1934, is the most famous work of the Italian writer Aldo Palazzeschi. The story is set in the suburb of Florence, Santa Maria a Coverciano, between 1918 and 1928.
The novella was published for the first time in 1961 in the magazine Novij mir and aroused anger among critics, pointing out that it is only "about the narrow, intimate experiences of the heroine".
The work is a typical example of Russian realism and deals with love, inner struggle, and missed opportunities.
A romanticized account of the author's pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1986. This experience of one of the three sacred paths of antiquity became a true initiation for him and changed him forever.
