The novel "The Zrinjski-Frankopan Conspiracy" (1893) was the most widely read Croatian book for ten years, and, thanks to the interest of readers at the time in historical events, it had a huge influence on younger generations of readers.
In this work, the author treats two types of characters in parallel. Some are real, realistic official detectives, and others are detective characters as formed by the creative thought and talent of the writers.
The main character, Jean Makar, is a poor laborer who works on the Paris railway. Through his story, the novel explores the themes of social inequality, the struggle for survival and the influence of the environment on the individual.
