The plot of the novel follows Jean-Esther van Gobseck, a usurer, and Maître Derville, a lawyer at the beginning of his career. Through this story, Balzac depicts the world of impoverished nobility, rich bourgeois, social intrigues, arranged marriages and greed. Cousin Pons owns an enviable collection of art objects, and his fate becomes the subject of intrigue and greed of various characters.

This novel is one of Balzac's most exciting crime novels, in which they are killed by poisons and emotionally manipulated. Gobseck is an unrecognized genius, and his fate and his collection of works of art become the subject of family greed and intrigue.
