In the year of the Lord 1363 in the monastery of St. Mary, two people die under suspicious circumstances, and the event attracts the attention of the powerful John Thoresby, Chancellor of England and Archbishop of York.
One victim is a pilgrim, while the other is Thoresby's protégé, a windbreaker, and both apparently died from a medicine prepared by master apothecary Nicholas Wilton. Disturbed by these events, the archbishop sends one-eyed spy Owen Archer to York to find the killer. Under the guise of a disillusioned soldier who wants to start a new life, Owen sneaks into Wilton's pharmacy as a child, only to discover that Wilton is bedridden and the business is run by his lovely, enigmatic young wife, Lucie. When Owen begins to untangle a tangled ball from a past full of scandals and tragedies, he learns that at the center of the secret is a desperate, forbidden love, which over time has turned into an obsession.
