Thomas Merton, as a monk of the twentieth century, taught by the experience of older monks, prepared his own small collection, and shared it with readers.
The collection of sayings from Verba Seniorum in the book Wisdom of the Desert brings a selection of sayings of the desert fathers of the fourth century, intended entirely for the benefit and edification of the reader. This precious collection of selected sayings from the 4th century can teach us many things today: mercy, contemplation, gratitude, modesty, but also how to ignore prejudices, resist compulsion and fearlessly move towards the unknown.
