Autor se bavi propitivanjem perspektive. Od uobičajenog razmatranja perspektive kao optičkog i simboličnog problema ulazi u jedan širi interdisciplinarni intelektualni sklop tipičan za suvremeni pristup kulturološkim problemima.

Nadovezujući se na tradiciju razmatranja perspektive kao optičkog i simboličkog problema u povijesti novijeg europskog slikarstva, Hubert Damisch u Porijeklu perspektive analizira i renesansne teorije i novije povijesnoumjetničke metode, stvarajući osebujan interdisciplinarno postuliran intelektualni sklop - mozaik znanja i pitanja tipičan za suvremeni pristup kulturološkim problemima. Osobito valja istaknuti da autor mnoge stranice posvećuje tzv. urbinskim perspektivama, trima slikama koje su tradicionalno pripisivane Lucijanu Vranjaninu. Zbog toga, kao i zbog epistemoloških dometa suvremene znanstvene metodologije i terminologije, ova knjiga - jedan od najčitanijih priručnika novije povijesti umjetnosti - zaslužuje posebnu pozornost hrvatske kulturne sredine.
