Schon der Titel des Romans verrät uns, wie Kozarac mit dem unkultivierten, toten Land beschäftigt war, das auf einen Mann wartete, einen fleißigen Bauern, der es bebauen würde. Er nannte es „totes Kapital“.

Grundlage der Handlung ist das Schicksal zweier Schwestern und die Liebesgeschichte. Durch die Handlung des Romans wollte Josip Kozarac den Kontrast zwischen Dorf und Stadt aufzeigen. Ihm zufolge wird das Dorf als ein Ort beschrieben, an dem aufrichtige Gefühle, Glück und Unbestechlichkeit vorherrschen, während die Stadt ein Ort des Müßiggangs und der Dekadenz ist.
