One of the most important works of the modern era, but also one of the most influential, "Capital" is a sharp critique of private property and the social relations it generates. Living in exile in England, where this work was mainly written, Marx drew on a wide knowledge of society there to support his analysis and generate new insights. Arguing that capitalism would create an increasing division of wealth and prosperity, he predicted its abolition and replacement by a system with common ownership of the means of production. "Capital" quickly gained a readership among the leaders of social democratic parties, especially in Russia and Germany, and eventually throughout the world, to become a work that Marx's friend and collaborator Friedrich Engels described as "the Bible of the working class."
The book consists of two volumes.
