Spirits Rebellious

Kahlil Gibran

Three stories of love, freedom and resistance to injustice, placing individual conscience against oppressive marriage, cruel laws and the alliance of religious and secular power.

Kahlil Gibran’s Spirits Rebellious presents three stories of individuals resisting social coercion and abuses of power. This English translation by Anthony Rizcallah Ferris contains Madame Rose Hanie, The Cry of the Graves and Khalil the Heretic. Lyrical language and moral protest unite their defence of human dignity.

In Madame Rose Hanie, a woman leaves a wealthy husband and material security to live with the man she loves. Her decision challenges marital inequality and a society that values outward respectability above emotional truth.

The Cry of the Graves examines the lives of condemned people and the circumstances disregarded by official judgement. Legality and justice prove painfully different, exposing a system that punishes the vulnerable without questioning its own violence.

In Khalil the Heretic, a young man expelled from a monastery confronts authorities who use religion and property to dominate peasants. His appeal links spiritual freedom with resistance to exploitation. Across the collection, Gibran combines compassion and social criticism, presenting conscience as a force capable of challenging an unjust order.
