Živjeti u Hrvatskoj: Zapisci iz nepovrata 1900 - 1941.

Josip Horvat
Horvat

The book represents a personal chronicle of Croatian history in the first half of the 20th century, written by Josip Horvat with the intention of documenting the social, political, and cultural changes that shaped Croatia between 1900 and 1941.

The book is divided into two parts: Chronicle of Stolen Youth and Croatian Microcosm between the Two Wars. In the first part, Horvat recalls his childhood and youth, describing the atmosphere of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, World War I, and the creation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, Croats, and Slovenes. The second part focuses on the interwar period, analyzing political turbulence, cultural changes, and everyday life in Croatia. The author provides a personal perspective on key events and figures of the time, including politicians, intellectuals, and artists, and presents critical reflections on the social circumstances of the time.

Horvat's writing style is characterized by sharpness and irony, and his writings offer valuable insight into the mentality and everyday life of Croatian society during the turbulent period. Although the manuscript was written with "modest ambitions," its publication in 1983 was recognized as a significant contribution to Croatian historiography, providing authentic testimony to a time that the author called "irreversible."
