S jedne strane, trebalo bi da čitalac može steći relativno cjelovitu sliku o domeni lingvistike i o njezinim osnovnim problemima ako knjigu pročita od početka do kraja. Ali, isto tako, oni koje zanimaju samo određena područja unutar znanosti o jeziku pogledat će pojedina poglavlja i odjeljke posvećene upravo tim pitanjima."
