The priceless original art treasure is believed to be the work of Empress Catherine II, who carefully selected works of art for her collection.

With the fall of communism, and thus the notion that the museum contains works that are a potential source of "politically dangerous" ideas that could introduce "formalist and bourgeois principles" into Russian art, the doors of the museum opened to visitors and citizens, revealing a previously inaccessible archive of paintings and artifacts, masterpieces of Russian and world fine art.
