With the fall of communism, and thus the notion that the museum contains works that are a potential source of "politically dangerous" ideas that could introduce "formalist and bourgeois principles" into Russian art, the doors of the museum opened to visitors and citizens, revealing a previously inaccessible archive of paintings and artifacts, masterpieces of Russian and world fine art.
