Smrt Smail-age Čengića

Smrt Smail-age Čengića

Ivan Mažuranić

Mažuranić literary shaped his vision of the death of the Turkish motor Smail-age into an epic song consisting of five cantos: Agovanje, Noćnik, Ceta, Harač and Kob.

Through a real historical event, the writer portrayed the Turkish warrior Smail-Aga, his heartless tyranny over the Montenegrins, and their revenge and Aga's well-deserved death. The song summarizes the entire past of Croats and South Slavs through four centuries of struggle with the Turks and highlights the necessity of fighting for the highest human ideals – love for humanity, freedom and homeland.
