Složna braća

Složna braća

John Grisham

They call themselves the Brethren: three disgraced former judges doing time in a Florida federal prison. One was sent up for tax evasion. Another, for skimming bingo profits. The third for a career-ending drunken joyride.

In an open-air prison in Florida, three unusual sinners, affectionately called Brothers by the local prison population, are paying their debt to society. All three were once judges in civil life, and now in prison they lead the Lower Federal Court where, with the blessing of the administration, they resolve petty disputes between prisoners. But in their free time, which they have plenty of, the Brothers will dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to their small side business. In discreet magazines for mature homosexuals, they publish fake ads in the hope of ensnaring some rich, preferably married, man with latent proclivities. And while their skillfully designed blackmail plan bears the first fruits, a victim will bite their hook that they never expected. Suddenly, their seemingly harmless game will turn into a deadly trap from which there is no way out.

John Grisham has created another thrilling legal thriller with his latest novel, The Fraudulent Brothers, which is probably the culmination of his cynical sneer at American lawyers. In this novel without a single positive character, all shades of morality between dark gray and black are shown. It is to the author's credit that he found a story that captures and touches the nerve of contemporary society in this vicious circle of crooks, weaklings, swindlers, manipulators and liars.
