A safe house is read in the breath and leaves you breathless. Marina Vujčić talks about violence that is not written about in the newspapers, about women who suffer and fail to find a way out.
A woman killed her husband, stabbed him to death, it was a murder on the spot. Neither the neighbors nor the family can believe that she was able to do this because, regardless of the occasional quarrel, they were a perfectly normal couple. How is it that Lada Lončar – a gentle woman, the mother of a girl – killed her husband, a respected university professor? Now, while serving her sentence in a women's penitentiary, surrounded by all sorts of offenders, she can think about what led her to give up makeup, how she lost her friends and why she gave up her career. How did she become a wife locked up in the four walls of her apartment, just as she is now in prison? Who was her husband, the person adored by her mother and everyone else, who was really this Mr. Perfect?
Safe House is a cry against verbal and psychological violence, a warning not to take the lives of our friends for granted, and above all, a novel about the fact that we should always be the first person in our lives.
