Pod tuđim utjecajem

Jane Austen

Jane Austen's last completed novel, published in 1817. The work belongs to the mature phase of the author's creativity and stands out for its melancholic tone, the theme of second-chance love and the introspective portrait of the protagonist Anna Elliot.

The novel follows Anne Elliot, a 27-year-old noblewoman who broke off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a naval officer, eight years ago at the urging of her family and friend Lady Russell, who considered him unsuitable due to his low social status.

Anne is still in love with Wentworth, but he shows a coldness at first, as he is still hurt by the rejection. During their reunions, Anne demonstrates her intelligence, sensitivity and capacity for compassion. Captain Wentworth attracts the attention of other women, particularly Louisa Musgrove, which causes further misunderstandings. In parallel, Anne attracts the attention of Mr. Elliot, her cousin and heir to the family estate, but his intentions are questionable.

Through a series of events, including Louise Musgrove's serious accident and several heartfelt moments between Anne and Wentworth, the captain realizes that he never stopped loving Anne. She ends up reciprocating his feelings, defying all the conventions and expectations of society. Anne and Wentworth become engaged again, this time determined not to let outside influences tear them apart. Their relationship symbolizes the victory of true love over social prejudices and insecurities.

"Persuasion" is a work that stands out for its emotional depth, refinement and realistic depiction of society. Anne Elliot is one of Austen's most complex heroines, and the novel leaves a lasting message about the power of love, forgiveness and personal courage.
