Sentimentalno putovanje po Francuskoj i Italiji

Sentimentalno putovanje po Francuskoj i Italiji

Laurence Sterne

"Sentimental Journey in France and Italy" is a novel without a real plot, a journey without a specific destination, which tells about the adventures of the respected Parson Yorick, the alter ego of the author himself.

Sterne will divert the story from a mere description of the journey and imbue it with a series of dramatic sketches, ironic incidents, philosophical inspirations, reminiscences and anecdotes; he will combine sharp wisdom with joy, irony with tender feelings. And to show once again why he has been celebrated for centuries as an author of an inimitably original style and declared the first author of the stream of consciousness literary direction.

Written and first published in 1768, less than a month before Sterne lost his long-term battle with tuberculosis, "A Sentimental Journey" can be considered a kind of epilogue to the novel "The Life and Views of Mr. Tristram Shandy", Sterne's masterpiece, celebrated for centuries as one of of the most influential modern novels and one of the fundamental icons of literary experimentalism.

The exceptional popularity and influence of the novel "Sentimental Journey" helped, on the other hand, to establish travel writing as a dominant genre in the second half of the 18th century. Unlike previous travel writings, which emphasized an objective point of view and classic descriptions of space, "Sentimental Journey the journey" concentrated, namely, on subjective discussions about personal taste, behavior and morality and thereby paved the way for contemporary travel writings and literature as such.
