The title of the novel refers to the biblical motif of Cain and Abel, the story of the first fratricide in human history. In this context, the novel explores the guilt and consequences of the moral decisions of the main characters. The novel is set in the time after the Second World War, and deals with the destinies of individuals marked by war and post-war events. The main characters often face internal conflicts, trying to understand their own role in the violence and injustice they have experienced or caused.
