Mjesečareva lekcija

Mjesečareva lekcija

Frederico Pedreira

A boy obsessed with losing weight spends his summer holidays with his grandparents in the mythical "green house" where his father and uncles left behind a treasure trove of objects and memories. The novel is the winner of the 2021 European Prize for Liter

A boy and his brother continuously watch a video of the 1990 European Champions Cup final between Milan and Benfica, and no one notices when the family dog suffers a seizure. On hot summer nights, the boy daydreams in front of posters with advertisements for cigarette brands and figures of famous motorists such as Fittipaldi and Prost. The green house has a huge library, a legacy of the boy's great-grandfather, who at one time became close to the famous Portuguese writer Fernando Pesso. The boy turns from football to endless rows of dusty books: he questions the choice of an ancestor he saw once or twice in his life and remembers him as a decrepit old man. He is looking for himself, from a trip with his mother to the USA, Tunisia and Algeria, to a period of anxiety and doubt in a stuffy dorm room. He transforms into a young man who, among crazy students from all over the world, concludes that he should not have left his homeland and despises the idea of cosmopolitanism. But a new friend, a new family is waiting for him. Will it be enough to make sense of his past and to connect it with the future you have planned?
