The author analyzes the historical, demographic and religious processes that shaped the ethnic picture in the areas of Bosnia, Slavonia and Srijem throughout the Middle Ages and the Ottoman period.
Croatian Catholics settled these areas in the early Middle Ages, developing their own feudal structures and spiritual identity under the auspices of the Catholic Church. A separate religious phenomenon also emerged in Bosnia – the Bosnian Church, which was often in conflict with papal authority. The Ottoman conquests in the 15th and 16th centuries brought major changes – Islamization, depopulation and migration. Many Croatian Catholics left Bosnia and Srijem, fleeing to Slavonia and the Habsburg lands, while others converted to Islam or Orthodoxy.
By the end of the 17th century, after the Great Vienna War (1683–1699), the demographic structure of the region had changed significantly. Slavonia and Srijem were liberated from the Ottomans and the Catholic population gradually recovered, while the Muslim population remained dominant in Bosnia. The book provides a detailed insight into the complex processes of ethnic and religious transformations in this turbulent period.
