Ova je knjiga nastala na temelju proze Ponižene ulice (Zora, Zagreb, 1950).

Izbačene su neke, po autorovu mišljenju, nezgrapne glave i čitavoj prozi dodan je smisao kakav je bio u početku zamišljen ali nije dosljedno proveden. Kako bi se čitaoci mogli snaći, autor je promijenio naslov pa se tako ova nova varijanta zove Poniženi grad. Tekst ovog izdanja je konačan.
