"The Plains of Return" is the fourth novel in the "Children of Earth" series by author Jean M. Auel, which follows the journey of Aila and Jondalar through Europe during the last ice age.
After leaving the Mammoth Hunters, the two embark on a dangerous and challenging journey to Jondalar's homeland, following the course of the Great Mother River (now the Danube) from its mouth at the Black Sea to its source in present-day Germany.
During their journey, they traverse some 4,000 kilometers through the diverse and harsh landscapes of Ice Age Europe, including vast steppes, swamps, forests, mountains, dangerous river crossings, and even glaciers. Along the way, they encounter different tribes and communities, confronting cultural differences, survival challenges, and their own inner turmoil. Ayla's healing skills, knowledge of herbs, and ability to communicate with animals often help them gain the trust and respect of strangers.
The novel explores themes of love, belonging, prejudice, and adaptation as Ayla and Jondalar struggle to find their place in a constantly changing world. The book provides a detailed insight into prehistoric life, customs, and beliefs, drawing on the author's extensive research on the Paleolithic period.
"Plains of Return" continues the story of Ailee, a Cro-Magnon woman raised among Neanderthals, who faces the challenges of acceptance among her own people and finding her identity in a world full of uncertainty.
The book consists of two volumes.
