Dolazak Hrvata

Dolazak Hrvata

Ksaver Šandor Gjalski

The historical tale, published in 1905, deals with the legendary arrival of the Croatian people to the present-day region in the 7th century. The work is stylized in the spirit of romanticism and national revival, and draws on mythical elements and folk t

The plot is based on the depiction of the arrival of Croatian tribes led by the White and Black Croats to the areas of present-day Dalmatia and Lika. It depicts contacts with the indigenous population, the fight against the Avars, and the conversion of the Croats to Christianity under the influence of the pope and the clergy.

Gjalski stylizes the Croats as a people of high morality, courage, and a sense of justice, emphasizing their role in the creation of the European Christian civilization space. The characters are idealized, and the narrative is enriched with an epic tone and archaic language, which enhances the national and historical pathos.

The work does not have a strictly documentary character, but combines historical facts with literary fiction in order to inspire a sense of pride and belonging in the reader. The arrival of the Croats is thus both a literary and ideological confirmation of national identity, particularly important in the context of Croatian cultural and political affirmation at the beginning of the 20th century.
