Put oko svijeta u osamdeset dana

Put oko svijeta u osamdeset dana

Jules Verne

The novel Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne is one of the most famous adventure works in world literature. The book celebrates exploration, knowledge, and the human ability to transcend boundaries.

The main character, an English gentleman named Phileas Fogg, makes a bet at the London Reform Club that he will circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days, which was an extremely daring and risky undertaking at the time (the 1870s). Accompanied by his new, resourceful servant Passepartout, Fogg embarks on an incredible journey that takes them through Egypt, India, China, Japan, and the United States.

Along the way, they encounter numerous challenges – missed steamships, rebels, natural disasters, and conspiracies – but also touching moments, such as rescuing a young Indian woman, Aouda, who later falls in love with Fogg. Along with their journey, the English detective Fix secretly follows them, convinced that Fogg is actually a bank robber.

The novel combines scientific imagination with precision in describing geographical locations and means of transportation of the time. Verne depicts the spirit of progress and faith in technology, but also the strength of human determination and nobility. Fogg, although initially cold and rational, shows heart throughout the journey and becomes a true hero.

Despite facing many obstacles, Fogg manages to complete the journey – and just in time, realizing that he has gained an extra day due to the time zones. In doing so, Verne sends the message that perseverance, wisdom and faith lead to the goal – no matter how far away it may be.
