The novel Starinska prica from 1978 is one of the most personal and emotional works by Hungarian writer Magda Szabó, in which the author combines a family saga, women's destiny, and criticism of social norms into one powerful literary testimony.

Roman je poluautobiografska priča, ispričana iz perspektive ćerke koja pokušava da razume život svoje majke. Glavni lik, Emerenc, inteligentna, ambiciozna i hrabra žena, rođena je u tradicionalnom mađarskom okruženju 19. veka, gde su stroga patrijarhalna pravila i društvena očekivanja često gušila ženske slobode.

Uprkos svom talentu i želji za obrazovanjem, Emerenc se suočava sa brojnim ograničenjima: od nje se očekuje da bude poslušna ćerka, dobra supruga i samopožrtvovana supruga. Ali ona to ne prihvata. Roman prati njen put borbe, žrtve i tihog prkosa, dok pokušava da pomiri sopstvene snove sa porodičnim i društvenim pritiscima.

Nakon njene smrti, ćerka - naratorka - pokušava da rekonstruiše život svoje majke i da je razume ne samo kao roditelja, već i kao ženu sa sopstvenim neostvarenim težnjama. Kroz ovaj proces, nastaje „stara priča“ - nežan, ali bolan omaž generaciji žena.
