Allegri, ein renommierter italienischer Journalist, stützte seine Arbeit auf Tausende von Dokumenten, Zeugnissen und Archivquellen und schuf so eine lebendige Biografie, die die spirituelle Stärke und das Charisma dieses Kapuzinermönchs beleuchtet.

1887 als Francesco Forgione in einer armen Familie in Pietrelcina geboren, trat Pater Pio mit 16 Jahren in das Noviziat der Kapuziner ein. Er war der erste Priester in der Kirchengeschichte, der über 50 Jahre lang die Stigmata – die Wunden Christi – trug. Sein Leben war geprägt von wundersamen Phänomenen: Bilokation, Prophezeiungen, Heilungen und Bekehrungen. Das Buch beschreibt, wie er mit den Trauernden weinte, mit den Glücklichen lachte und Trost spendete, stets mit Optimismus, Glauben und Liebe in die Zukunft blickte. Er erbaute das „Haus zur Linderung des Leidens“, ein modernes Krankenhaus, und demonstrierte damit praktische Krankenpflege.

Allegri betont Pios Kampf gegen Versuchungen und die Mächte des Bösen, aber auch seinen unerschütterlichen Glauben. Er starb 1968 und wurde 2002 von Papst Johannes Paul II. heiliggesprochen. Sein unverwester Körper in San Giovanni Rotondo zieht Pilger an, wo seine Fürsprache spürbar ist.
