Leopard

Jo Nesbo

Leopard (2009) by Jo Nesbø, the sixth novel in the series about Harry Hole, a Norwegian detective known for his struggle with inner demons and complex crimes, takes the reader on a dark and tense search for a serial killer.

After the events of The Bigfoot, Harry retreated to Hong Kong, escaping trauma, alcohol, and his past. However, when two women are found brutally murdered in Oslo with an unusual weapon – a device that inflicts 24 wounds in the mouth – the police persuade him to return.

Harry, though heartbroken, takes on the case because his father is dying, and the investigation forces him to face personal and professional challenges. He arrives in Norway with Kają Solness, a young detective who becomes his ally. He soon discovers that the killer uses a sophisticated method and leaves clues that lead to exotic locations, including the Congo, where part of the action takes place. Harry engages in a dangerous game with a killer who is always one step ahead, while confronting corruption within the police and a rivalry with his colleague Bellman from Kripos.

The plot stretches from the snowy Norwegian mountains to the African jungle, intertwining political intrigue, colonial history, and personal vendettas. Nesbø masterfully builds tension, and Harry's struggle with alcoholism and guilt deepens his character. The novel ends with an unexpected twist, leaving room for further adventures. The Leopard is classic Nesbø: dark, layered, and full of adrenaline.
