Mark Twain

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the first truly realistic children's novel, not only in American but also in world children's literature. Twain's most famous work and a favorite children's book in which the writer described his boyhood experiences.

It follows the adventures of a mischievous boy, Thomas Sawyer, and his relationship with his family, friends, and other residents of a town called St. Petersburg, which closely resembles Twain's hometown. This resourceful boy gets into various problems, but he always manages to get out of them. His curiosity and mischief often cause problems for his Aunt Polly, who took care of him. Twain believed that children's literature should also be entertaining. The humor used by the author is connected to his real childhood, which he spent on the banks of the Mississippi River. Mark Twain lovingly dedicated this novel to his wife. He decided to write down the adventures that his school friends experienced, and often himself. Twain would say of Tom Sawyer that it was a combination of two boys he knew, and he intended the book mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls. However, he hoped that even older people would not give up on this work, because it could serve as a reminder of what they once were, felt, thought, and said. The book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was a great success, and is still a popular children's book to this day.
