Obećaješ li da nećeš nikome reći?

Obećaješ li da nećeš nikome reći?

Mary Jane Clark

The novel Will You Promise Not to Tell? (2000), the second part of the series about KEY News journalists, is a tense crime thriller set in the world of high-stakes auctions and hidden secrets of New York.

The author, a former CNN reporter, combines media sensationalism with intrigue, creating a story about the dangers of an investigation that could save a career - or end in death. The main character, Farrell Slater, a talented TV producer for KEY News, is at a professional low: her job is hanging in the balance after she failed to convince her boss to cover an important story. Her life changes when she accidentally discovers a sensational secret - a prestigious New York auction house has just sold a Fabergé egg for six million dollars, but it is a fake. Farrell knows this firsthand, and a young student who has promised to keep her connection to the object shares a similar suspicion. The two women, unbeknownst to each other, become targets of dangerous forces guarding the secret.

Along with cameraman Bill Donahue, Farrell's close associate and potential romantic interest, she throws herself into the investigation. She is quickly joined by FBI agent Jack Reilly, a charismatic art fraud investigator who sees the case as a chance for advancement. Their journey leads through the world of elite auctions, the history of Fabergé masters and the Romanov dynasty - from imperial treasures to modern smugglers who will stop at nothing to protect their secrets. Other figures are involved: an eccentric Russian immigrant with deep roots in the past, ambitious auctioneers and media wolves chasing sensational headlines.

The tension builds through a series of false leads, chases through the night streets of Manhattan and unexpected alliances. Farrell is faced with moral dilemmas: will she risk everything for a story that would bring her back to the top, or will she prioritize safety? Clark masterfully portrays the media circus, where truth falls victim to speed and ambition, and characters—like Farrelly's dogged strength and Reilly's cool determination—celebrate team dynamics in the midst of danger. The novel criticizes the world of false treasures and hidden motives, emphasizing that some secrets are worth more than life.

With witty dialogue and a fast pace, the book is ideal for fans of thrillers like Sidney Sheldon or Iris Johansen, offering not only tension but also depth of characters wounded by the past. It ends open-ended, hinting at further adventures in the series.
