Priče o braku i seksu

Priče o braku i seksu

Michal Viewegh

The book contains about twenty stories connected into one whole by the main character (the writer Oskar). It is, therefore, a kind of novel that, through intimate confessions, actually talks about the loneliness of the modern intellectual.

The main character, a thirty-five-year-old successful writer Oskar, after divorcing his wife Zuzana, gets used to the solitude and freedom of being single, enjoying the benefits – including sexual adventures – but also facing emotional challenges.

The stories follow Oskar’s seasonal love affairs: from meeting Zuzana, who becomes the mother of his son, through the development of their marriage to their divorce. In the key story “Fiacolata”, Oskar enters into a secret relationship with Monica, the wife of his best friend Kamil. Falling in love brings happiness, but also remorse for lying. On a winter vacation in Italy, during a “fiacolata” (a nighttime candlelight drive), almost everything is revealed, but they change their minds and continue the secret, destroying themselves from within.

Oskar’s friends and loves – like Kamil, unaware of the infidelity – add depth to the dynamics of friendship and betrayal. Themes of marriage, sex, divorce, and independence are explored through introspective confessions: not just superficial anecdotes, but deep dilemmas about feelings, lies, and the transience of relationships. Viewegh's style is realistic, humorous, and not overly sensational, combining a light tone with serious reflections on the male world, without sexism - women are there as emotional and erotic partners.
