Anđelko Mijatović

The Bleiburg Tragedy and the Way of the Cross of the Croatian People in 1945 is a historical-documentary work by Croatian historian and university professor Anđelko Mijatović.

The book is a concise study of one of the greatest tragedies of the Croatian people in World War II – the surrender and mass suffering of members of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) in Bleiburg (Austria) and on the "Way of the Cross" return to Yugoslavia. Mijatović, the author of numerous works on Croatian history (e.g. The Battle of Krbava Field in 1493, A Review of the Political Work of Dr. Franjo Tuđman), uses archival documents, survivor testimonies and international sources to reconstruct the events, emphasizing the genocidal dimensions of communist terror. The work serves as a reminder of the crimes against Croats, criticizing the Allied role in the surrender of prisoners and Yugoslav repression.
