Vrata harema

Vrata harema

Katie Hickman

Student Elizabeth Staveley is conducting research on tales from the late 16th century in the library at Oxford University, when she suddenly comes across a four-hundred-year-old manuscript inserted into a book.

Deciphering the text on an ancient piece of paper, Elizabeth slowly uncovers a precious story that has remained locked away. Escaping a frustrating relationship with a womanizer, Elizabeth decides to leave Oxford and fly to Istanbul to further investigate the story of Celia Lamprey, the daughter of a British sea captain who perishes at sea, leaving her daughter at the mercy of slave traders who will sell her to the Sultan's harem. The story moves to 1599, in Constantinople. In the harem, Celia learns that Paul Pindar, her fiancé whom she was supposed to marry before she was captured, is in Constantinople as secretary to the British ambassador and that he is tasked with delivering a gift to the Sultan in order to open trade relations between Britain and the Ottoman Empire.
