Smrt Smail-age Čengića
The Death of Smail-aga Čengić, a classic work of Croatian literature, is a romantic poem of 1,134 verses composed in five cantos, written partly at the request of Dimitrij Demeter.
Mažuranić finds the basic material in a real event, the death of the Turkish hero and Herzegovinian pasha Smailage Čengić in the conflict with the Montenegrins in the fall of 1840. The basic idea of the song is the transience of force, faith in justice and the final victory of good in life.
