Sabrana djela A. P. Čehova #1: Humoreske
This book includes Chekhov's works from 1880-1885, i.e. humoresques, short stories, and sketches, starting with Letters to a Learned Neighbor, which Chekhov considered the beginning of his literary career.
The collection “Humoreske” from 1959 is one of the most beautiful and complete Croatian selections of Chekhov’s early humorous stories. The collection contains 72 short stories in which Chekhov’s genius for “laughter through tears” is already fully manifested.
All the stories were written for Moscow and St. Petersburg humorous newspapers under the pseudonyms Antoš Čehonte and Čovjek bez slezene. Although short (from 1 to 8 pages), they already contain all the elements of late Chekhov: the absurdity of everyday life, the tragic beneath the comic, a masterful economy of words and unexpected endings that leave the reader speechless.
