Pierre Rey

The novel is introspective and critically depicts the modern way of life and the illusion of success without inner fulfillment.

The main character is a successful man (a journalist/businessman, depending on the interpretation), who has everything on the outside – a career, status and money – but inside he feels emptiness and dissatisfaction. At one point he decides to “get out” of his own life, that is, to abandon the established patterns and social norms that suffocate him. Through a series of episodes and encounters, the protagonist explores the limits of freedom: he engages in unusual relationships, tries hedonism and tries to find an authentic experience of life. However, the more he tries to escape from society and himself, the more he faces his own internal conflicts and feelings of loss. The title “Out” symbolizes his exit from the conventional world, but also the state of being out of balance – being “outside” of himself and reality. At the end of the novel, the question remains open whether a person can really escape from his own identity or whether facing oneself is the only true way out.
