Petar Požar

"Croatian Rights" presents a selection of key historical documents that shape the Croatian legal tradition – from medieval charters to modern acts – emphasizing the continuity of Croatian autonomy within the broader European framework.

Croatian Rights is a systematically prepared collection of fundamental sources of Croatian state and legal history. The book includes documents that testify to the long-term political and legal individuality of Croatian lands, including decisions of medieval parliaments, noble privileges, contractual relations with other political entities, and sources that reflect the developed legal identity of the Croatian community. The material has been selected to provide the reader with an overview of the development of Croatian political institutions and legal principles, especially those that confirm the subjectivity of the Croatian state within complex historical integrations such as the personal union with Hungary.

Požar's book was published at a crucial moment in Croatian history. The year 1990, marked by democratization and the strengthening of demands for the restoration of full state sovereignty, stimulated increased interest in original documents that confirm the historical and legal continuity of Croatian statehood. In this context, the publication had both an educational and identity role: it provided the general public, as well as experts, with access to difficult-to-access sources that had served for centuries as an argument for Croatian political rights.

Thanks to its clarity, chronological scope, and clear purpose, Croatian Rights occupies an important place in modern historiography and law, as a manual that helps understand the historical basis of the concepts of Croatian autonomy, self-government, and state subjectivity.
