Carmen

Carmen

Prosper Merimee

In Carmen, Merimee paints a picture of the Spanish environment showing gypsies, smugglers and two young people, Jose and Carmen, who are torn apart by great passions.

During his journey through Spain, the narrator meets Don José, a former soldier who tells him his life story. At first, Don José is an honest and disciplined soldier. His life changes when he meets Carmen, a beautiful and free-spirited gypsy woman who works in a tobacco factory in Seville. Carmen is rebellious, unpredictable, and does not want to be bound by the rules of any man. Because of his love for Carmen, he enters the world of smugglers and criminals. Carmen loves him at times, but refuses to belong to anyone. When he falls in love with the bullfighter Escamilla, Don José becomes obsessed with jealousy. In the end, unable to accept that Carmen is leaving him, Don José kills her. After the crime, he surrenders to the authorities.
