Podzemna diplomacija: Politička, vojnička i industrijska špijunaža u miru i ratu

Hans R. Berndorff, Thomas M. Johnson, Georges Ladoux

A documentary book about political, military and industrial espionage in peace and war. Three authors (Berndorff, Ladoux, Johnson) reveal the methods, cases and secret operations of secret services before, during and after the First World War.

Underground Diplomacy – Political, Military and Industrial Espionage in Peace and War is a compilation and synthesis of three authors: German journalist and publicist H. R. Berndorff, French secret service chief Commandant Georges Ladoux and American author Thomas M. Johnson.

In the interwar and immediate postwar period, the book was a real treat for fans of spy literature. Instead of fiction, it offers true stories, methods and anecdotes from the world of secret services. It covers the period before World War I, the war itself and the immediate aftermath, showing how the great powers conducted "underground diplomacy" – espionage, sabotage, disinformation, recruitment of agents and industrial theft of secrets.

Berndorff brings a German perspective and vivid stories about German agents, Ladoux (former head of French counter-intelligence, known for the Mata Hari case) reveals French operations and the infighting of the secret services, while Johnson adds an American perspective on international espionage. The result is a dynamic, fact-rich book that takes the reader through the secret war behind the scenes of great history.

The style is journalistic, tense and accessible - full of concrete cases, names of agents, methods of secret correspondence, double games and dramatic arrests. The book shows how espionage is not just a "romantic" business, but a serious, dirty and often deadly part of international politics and warfare.

Today, this edition is an antiquarian rarity and sought after by lovers of the history of the First World War, the secret services and interwar journalism. Ideal for those interested in the real foundations of later spy literature and films.
