Ivo Juras

A geography textbook for all continents (except Europe) intended for lower grades of secondary schools in the Independent State of Croatia. The work of the prominent Croatian geographer and pedagogue Ivo Juras, illustrated with interesting black-and-white

Geographical Overview of Asia, Africa, America and Australia is a textbook compiled by Ivo Juras (1886–1948), a famous Croatian geographer, cartographer, professor and author of several school manuals. It was published in 1942 in Zagreb by the Croatian State Printing House, during the period of the Independent State of Croatia.

The book is intended for lower grades of secondary schools (3rd grade of grammar schools and similar schools) as an overview of the geography of non-European continents. It contains a systematic overview of the physical, political and economic geography of Asia, Africa, North and South America and Australia with Oceania. The relief, climate, rivers, flora and fauna, population, economy and the most important countries and regions of each continent are covered.

Ivo Juras, born in Zadar, studied geography and history in Zagreb, Graz and Vienna. He worked as a professor in Zadar and Split (where he was also the principal of the Classical Gymnasium), and after being expelled by the Italian authorities in 1941, he moved to Zagreb. He was a prolific author of textbooks that were used for decades (e.g. Osnove zemljopis, Zemljopis Jugoslavije, Zemljopis Europe). This textbook represents a continuation of his many years of pedagogical work on adapting geographical material to students.

The textbook is illustrated with numerous sketches and pictures, which was an important pedagogical feature for a better understanding of geographical facts. It is written in clear, concise and professional Croatian language, adapted to the curriculum of the time. It reflects the then approach to geography, which combines natural features with elements of anthropogeography and economics.

In a broader context, the 1942 edition testifies to the continuity of Croatian geographical literature and the school system even in wartime conditions. Juras was active in the Croatian Catholic movement, which influenced his entire work.
