Osvit: Slike iz tridesetih godina
A historical novel about the Croatian national revival (Illyrianism) in the 1830s. Gjalski's first significant work of historical prose, a realistic-romantic depiction of the awakening of national consciousness.
The story takes place in the 1830s and depicts the beginnings of the Croatian national revival (Illyrianism). Gjalski depicts the awakening of national consciousness among the Croatian nobility and intelligentsia, the conflicts between the old conservative order and new ideas, the role of literature and culture in the national movement, and the first steps towards political and cultural unity. The novel is structured as a series of paintings (hence the subtitle Paintings from the 1930s), which gives it a mosaic, vivid character.
The style of the work represents a combination of realism and romanticism: Gjalski faithfully reconstructs the historical atmosphere, customs, languages, and social relations, but at the same time introduces romantic enthusiasm, idealization of the revivalists, and an optimistic view of the national future. As in most of his works, the author critically depicts the nobility and the bourgeoisie, but in Dawn a positive, almost hymnical tone towards the Illyrian movement prevails.
The novel had a great resonance in the public because it dealt with a relatively recent and still vivid past. It is considered a continuation of Šenoa's tradition of the historical novel, but with a more pronounced realistic approach and psychological characterization of the characters.
Dawn is an important part of Gjalski's oeuvre between his famous socially critical novels (U novom dvoru, Pod starim krovovima, Janko Borislavić) and later historical works (Za materinsu riječ, Dolazak Hrvata). It represents a key literary monument of the Croatian Renaissance period and testifies to the author's deep national commitment. Today it is valued as an antiquarian rarity and a significant work of Croatian historical prose of the late 19th century.
