Iz prirode: popularno-naučna razmatranja

Feliks Barušić

The book by Feliks Barušić, a Croatian writer, pedagogue and science popularizer from Osijek, is a collection of popular science essays about natural phenomena, science and life intended for a wider audience.

In the book, Barušić collected a series of shorter and longer essays, reflections and articles in which he deals with topics from natural sciences in an accessible, understandable and literary manner. His goal was to bring natural sciences closer to a wider reading audience — teachers, students, citizens and everyone interested in science, not just experts.

The work contains reflections on physical and biological phenomena, astronomy, meteorology, botany, zoology and general natural laws. Barušić combines scientific facts with philosophical, moral and didactic reflections, typical of popular science literature of the period (a similar approach was taken by authors such as Camille Flammarion or domestic popularizers). The style is lively, picturesque and anecdotal, with the aim of educating, entertaining and encouraging the reader to observe and love nature.

Feliks Barušić was a prolific author of pedagogical and popular literature. In addition to this book, he also published titles such as For Leisure (1905), Happy Natures (1907) and collections of aphorisms. His work reflects the aspiration of the Croatian intelligentsia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries to democratize knowledge and bring it closer to the people through their native language.

The book is today a bibliographic rarity and represents an interesting example of the popularization of natural sciences in Slavonia and Croatia during the Austro-Hungarian era. It reflects the spirit of positivism and enlightenment that prevailed among the more advanced part of the Croatian intelligentsia of that time — faith in science, education and the progress of society through the spread of knowledge about nature.
